Rocketry

I'm writing this report quite a few months after the actually event, in fact, we're now half way through the EARS launch calendar. I'm relying on the flight card logs and the photos that I took at the launch to help me write this report, so there maybe a few jumps and twists, but it should all get there in the end.

Richard Osborne's Hades on a Hypertek J250The weather at this launch, which was the first of the 2002 season, was pretty terrible, with low cloud and a strong breeze. This didn't deter the flyers and we hade a smashing turn out that saw the membership of EARS grow to the same number as at the end of last year. This means that if anyone else joins, we're already past the membership total for last year, which is great.

As with most of these events, things were quite slow to get going, especially if the weather is on the iffy side. There were a number of model flights early on that got things going, Adrian Waters, Warren Stamp, Gary Groves, The Shackleton's and even myself all got rockets off before the first high power launch. Damien Burrin was the first to get a high power rocket into the air, when he launched his Oblivion rocket on an Aerotech H97.

Adrian Waters and his less than successful Blackrock MkIHelen Green was next up on the high power pad with her Launch Lizard on a R.A.T.T. Works H70, although there was a problem and the rocket didn't leave the pad. After that there was another large bout of model flying including Adrian Waters two stage scratch built Black Rock Mk I and Gary Sinclair's Loc Starburst on two Aerotech F32's. Jim MacFarlane brought along Gyroc, his actively stabilised rocket, which he flew twice, firstly on an Aerotech F13 and then on an Aerotech G12, both of which are 32mm RMS long burn glider motors.

It was quite slow on the high power side all day with only another four flights going off in between all the models. Pete Davy flew his modified PML Nimbus on a Hypertek I130 for a very nice flight. Chris Eilbeck flew his GSF on another Aerotech I200, for yet another optimal flight. Richard Osborne finally bagged his Level 2 with a flight of his Hades rocket on a Hypertek J250. The final high power flight of the day was mad by Gary Sinclair and his King Blobbo on an Aerotech J180.

All in all it was a cracking start to the EARS flying season, although let down a bit by the lack of Aerotech motors. With no sign of the Pro38 motors or an order from Aerotech, the rest of the season is shaping up to be a bit of a model fest.
