As a keen photographer I find that as I walk down the street I’m constantly looking at everything wondering if it would make a good image. By the time I’ve taken the photo, had it processed and mounted and entered it into one of the club’s competitions I’m in a state of anxious anticipation, waiting to see if it will do well. By the time the Judge has finished ripping it to shreds, I’m left wondering why I bother. Here in black & white is my attempt to show why I bother and the thought process that goes hand in hand with being a camera club photographer.

The Mug Who Got Mugged

Yesterday I was mugged while taking photos in Lisbon. It was ten minutes past ten in the morning and two unsavory gentlemen with a knife tried to relieve me of my wallet and camera gear. They managed to get my wallet, but I managed to hold onto my Nikon FA and my back pack and legged it. I later got my wallet back with the help of the Police, all my cards were still in it, they had just taken the single ten Euro note that I had been carrying, hardly worth the hassle.

I'll post more about the specifics of what happened another time, but just be aware of your surroundings and take care.

Annual Exhibition

It was the opening of the Annual Exhibition this evening, so instead of the usual meeting at Cockroft Hall, we assembled at the Guildhall for the official opening. For the second year running I didn't have anything in the exhibition, which is a bit of a shame, but then I've not really taken any photos for ages. You can see a preview of the exhibition here.

Missed Meetings...

I've missed quite a few meetings lately, mainly due to being on holiday in Turkey. While we were there I managed to shoot twenty sheets of film in my pinhole camera. I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to develop and print them though. It was nice to be taking photos again.

Another Missed Meeting

I felt terrible last night and since I didn't finish up in the office until ten to eight, I decided to go straight home. I missed the first projected image competition, but since I didn't have anything in it, I'm not too bothered to have missed it.

Missed Meeting

I missed last nights club meeting due to having to be home for eight o'clock. We had someone round to give us a quote for wooden flooring, so I missed Roger Hance FRPS and his talk "People in the Picture".

A New Season Approaches

Monday night sees the new camera club season start and it looks like it will be another barren year for me. I can't remember the last time I picked up a camera and used it in anger and I hardly read the photo magazines that drop through the door every week/month. To make matters worse, my wife has just bought herself a Nikon D70s, she now has better kit than I do!

Not Impressed

As you can see it's been over a year since I posted to this blog. That's mainly due to my wife giving birth to our first child on the 22nd of April last year. As a result I've been a bit busy, that coupled with working too many hours has resulted in me not taking any photos for ages.

Annual Print Competition

It was the annual print competition at the club last night and just like the slide competition I didn't have an entry in. There were some excellent photos on display; one of a pair of parrot tulips really caught my eye. The judge was Russell Linsey, who with his wife had given a talk at the club the other month, he was very good as per usual. I really need to get my finger out and take some more photos...

Points of View

It was the annual Points of View competition day with the club today and it was in the village of Foxton which is a few miles to the South West of Cambridge. Like previous years it was a case of turning up, getting the six subjects and trying your best to take some shots that might land you in second place. If you end up first, you have to set and judge the following years competition.

Annual Slide Competition

It was the annual slide competition at the club last night and for the first time since I joined I didn't have an entry in. There was some nice slides on display and the judging was pretty good. I'll have to try harder next year and actually take some photos to enter.
